BIG READ 2010

Boundary County Library: Ask Me What I'm Reading!

A community-wide reading program featuring To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

"The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The Big Read hopes to unite communities through great literature, as well as inspire students to become lifelong readers."

Library partners include:

Boundary County Human Rights Task Force

Peace Group

Bonners Ferry High School English Department

Sign-up begins January 22nd, with reading guides and buttons available for participants.

Participants can read the book on their own or together with family or friends.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide books for every participant. The library's sponsored book group will be provided with books first, any remaining can be checked out by others.

The library will be hosting a book group, with 38 books available for participants in that book group. The library's book group will be meeting every Saturday in February, 1 to 3 PM, with Larry and Barb Nelson returning as the group's discussion leaders.

Plans are being made with our partners for a special event after community members have had a chance to read the book - a showing of the movie and a documentary in conjunction with a larger group discussion - in early March.

Bonners Books is going to have copies on hand for people to buy, with discounts available for multiple copies (John@theBookstore, 267-2622)

Attention all teens and interested parents.  Boundary County Library has a unique opportunity to participate in the 2010 Big Read program in partnership with the Ada Public Library.  The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, and the 2010 book pick is the classic "To Kill a Mockingbird".  We at the Boundary County Library are looking for interested teens, grades 8-12, to join with us in reading the book and sharing thoughts about what we read.  We are hoping to share ideas online through the new online teen magazine, in community group discussions, or just in general with a friend or neighbor.  The idea behind Big Read is to get as many people in the community reading and talking about the same book as possible, and in this way bring the community together through a sharing of ideas and thoughts.  We are hoping to finish up our community Big Read with a viewing of the classic movie and possibly a documentary provided by our local Human Rights Task Force group, who is already signed up to read with us!

Our target month for reading is February 2010 and paperback copies will soon be available at the Boundary County Library.  Mark it on your calendar, call us with any ideas or questions and we hope to see you soon.

Thank you!  Your friendly staff @ the Boundary County Library.
